Lining up the slide bars / fitting a cross head and more riveting.
The centre of the cylinder is found by bolting a strip of metal across the front of the cylinder. A hole is drilled in the centre of the bar to mark the centre. attached to this hole is a nylon line.A peg is then located into the driving axle, the pointed end of which is the exact centre of the connecting rod. The nylon line is then fixed at its far end, tensioned so that it touches the point of the peg.
The nylon line where it exits the rear of the cylinder should be the exact centre and is then used as a marker to fit the slide bars so that they are in line with the piston rod.
The same on the right hand side of the loco.
Also on the right hand side, the cross head is sitting on the lower slide bar to check the alignment.
Axle box cross member stays being fitted.
The riveting team in action fitting the cab handrails. Here the rivet is being heated.
The heated rivet is then picked up in a pair of tongues and placed in the hole.
The two riveters then get to work. It is being held in place on the top, whilst being hammered into shape from underneath.
